Projects

The ResilientMENA team can count on a collective portfolio of experience on sustainable development, resilience promotion and knowledge exchange in the MENA region. Below is an overview of some of the work done by our team.

Diesel to Solar (D2S) Initiative, Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE), MENA Region, 2014 – 2016

RCREEE, in partnership with UNDP, launched a new regional initiative to promote private investments in off-grid, distributed generation systems, specifically solar-diesel hybrid systems. The project brought Resilient MENA’s Amer Barghouth, Ana Rovzar, and Rebecca Walters together for the first time. We conducted a thorough market assessment to identify promising investment opportunities and business models for diesel to solar hybrids in Djibouti, Egypt, Sudan, and Yemen. We also provided advisory services and financial feasibility assessments to off-grid enterprises in the tourism and agricultural sectors converting from diesel to solar for their electricity and water pumping needs.

The Switchers: Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Case Studies, MENA Region, 2016-2017

Resilient MENA’s Amer Barghouth, Rebecca Walters, and Ana Rovzar have connected with the EU-funded SwitchMed project to identify and promote eco-social businesses—”the Switchers”—working on renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions in the Middle East and North Africa. The Switchers will join a collaborative, supportive network of entrepreneurs, businesses, and organizations creating environmental and social impact across the Mediterranean region. Their stories will also be told on theswitchers.eu.

Short-term Energy Finance Project, Sustainable Energy Unit, UNDP, Bahrain, 2016

Resilient MENA’s Amer Barghouth provided short-term technical assistance to the UNDP-hosted Sustainable Energy Unit of the Kingdom of Bahrain. He conducted a thorough review of the drafts for the country’s national energy efficiency and renewable energy action plans and built financial models to analyze the costs and benefits of the two plans.

Arab Future Energy Index, Regional Center for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency (RCREEE) and UNDP, MENA Region, 2013 – 2015

The Arab Future Energy Index (AFEX) is a policy assessment and benchmark tool that provides a detailed comparison of renewable energy and energy efficiency development in 17 countries of the Arab region on more than 30 different indicators. The reports provide an overview of countries’ progress toward creating better conditions for renewable energy and energy efficiency investments.
